This is a conference which highlights new and evolving technologies, and holds classes and exhibits for Librarians and Information Managers. This year, the emphasis was on "moving beyond Library 2.0" and some of the many different topics covered at the conference included:Mashups, Wiki's, Blogs, Podcastings, Game-based learning, and their possible application for Library Instruction.

The conference brought to light the evolution of technology and that social networking sites such as: Facebook and YouTube, blogs, wiki's,, and podcasts are here to stay! The key is to figure out how they can be used to enhance library instruction as well as promote learning in general. Is the thought of just learning in the classroom no more? Can learning, with the aid of new technology, occur anywhere at anytime using new technology ?

With a link to:

http://www.infotoday.com/cil2007/

If you are interested in further information on this topic, please check out the the IRC staff presentation on Social Computing.

Nikki Giovanni

Nikki Giovanni, poet, activist, and educator, has led an extraordinary life. Well, for one man it turned out to be that way. Video blogger Josh Wolf has been released from the Dublin Federal Correction Institution in California after seven and a half months for withholding a name of a person he was doing a video blog on. I pose this question, is it okay for journalists to be able to withhold names of their sources, and not Bloggers? What is the difference? What kind of distinctions need to be made to preserve freedom of speech.

To read this article

Camel Book Mobile ?

Throughout the years libraries have tried many methods to reach out to their patrons. Book mobiles deliver books to remote areas, and there are even outreach programs for the elderly and shut-ins. But there are other countries that are so remote that their version of a book mobile, is book delivery via a camel. This outreach program is in need of every one's help. They are in need of donations, especially popular selections such as children's story books, textbooks and general fiction books. Despite the rather "rustic" mode of transportation the Camel Book mobile system, it even possesses it's own rather sophisticated check out system.

To read this article.

Death of the Newspaper?

Earlier this month, the oldest newspaper based out of Stockholm Sweden announced that they would cease publication in print and go completely online. What is Wikipedia and why should you caution your students about it?
According to TechWeb.com, the simple definition of a wiki is "a web site that can be quickly edited by its visitors..." The implication for scholarly research is clear--if anyone can edit, how can validity be determined?
The solution is simple--students must treat Wikipedia like any other web source to determine the validity of the content. Do the facts jibe with other sources? Is the (original) author a scholar in his field? Even Jimmy Wales, the creator of Wikipedia, cautions students about using it for serious research. Read a blog entry with some of his thoughts in the Chronicle.
Click here to read an interesting article about Wikipedia.
Students will use Wikipedia; it is up to us as educators to give them the tools to use it properly.

How can I find a specific journal article without searching every database?

The HCC Library subscribes to many useful tools; one of the most potentially useful ones can be found under the link "Locate a Journal" on the Library's home page. From there, clicking on "Journals found in our online databases" allows you to type in a journal name; the tool will identify which of our online databases contains that journal, and whether or not it is full-text. No more going from database to database to see if the journal you need is indexed!! VERY useful if you have a citation and want the actual article. Try it and see if you agree. And, as always, feel free to call 131 if you have any questions.
