Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni, poet, activist, and educator, has led an extraordinary life. She has written many books for both young and old and has received recognition for her variety of achievements. It is too bad that Giovanni is trying to use this situation as a platform to promote her own political agenda. It is supposed to be about the victims, not Giovanni’s political ideology.
She is an embarrassment to Virginia Tech.
Nikki Giovanni was one of the first professors to realize the severity of the mental state of this individual. In her moving tribute during convocation, she reflected on other tragedies to unite victims, not promote a political ideology. She is a leader who is embracing and sharing the spirit of Virginia Tech - hardly what you would call an embarrassment.
After all the second guessing that the news did after the VT tragedy, Nikki Giovanni came out at the memorial and said the things I most needed to hear. That's what is what a poet does - give us a context to better understand life...and what happens in it. I was personally very grateful that she had a voice at this sad time.
